A wide range of teaching techniques and resources are used, including powerpoint presentations, demonstrations, visual aids, games and handouts. Exercise Groups Four free classes are held each week in Mangere and Otara venues. Instructors have experience working with different fitness levels and abilities. People with diabetes and other health problems are specially catered for, however the Diabetes Projects Trust recommends that a person starting a new exercise regime or with a medical condition checks with their Health Professional first. Exercises are 'low impact' (low stress to the body), and held in a fun environment with a range of 'sit down' exercises provided. Training the Trainers This exciting programme started in 2004 with 7.5 hour of training (split over a number of days, minimum of 2) and ongoing instructor support offered to individuals involved in health promoting to prevent diabetes. The programme covers a range of skills, activities and resources designed to help the health promoter make a real change to the behaviour of individuals, groups or a population. For the latest course information or a programme designed to meet your needs contact Kate Smallman. Diabetes Support Groups Diabetes Support Groups: Two groups currently meet in Otara and Mangere on a monthly basis to provide support and education for people with diabetes and their families. If you, or someone you know, would like to meet others with similar health issues, have the opportunity to ask questions and learn how to live well with diabetes, contact the Diabetes Projects Trust. We can also help set-up new groups. For other Auckland Support Groups, contact Diabetes Auckland on 09 623 2508. Community Events Displays and Demonstrations... The Diabetes Projects Trust provides information and support to those in the community who are concerned about healthy lifestyle/diabetes prevention. This includes schools, Doctors surgeries, community groups, churches. DPT works with other organisations and the community to put on health events and displays. We can offer specially made up display boards, talks to audiences of any size, cooking demonstrations, exercise demonstrations, and health assessments community screening free of charge. We also have equipment which we can loan to other organisations. Community Screening: This is an important area in health promotion, where people are screened to establish whether or not they are at risk of Type 2 diabetes. It is important to note that this can NEVER provide a diagnosis or clearance, but is an indicator only, and where risk exists the person will be referred to their health professional for a follow-up. Screening by DPT uses a tool specially designed and tested by CODA which meets current recognised recommendations for community screening. Policies are also in place to ensure safety of testing and consistency of message. DPT would like to thank Roche Diagnostics for their support in providing equipment and testing materials. |
